Huawei ban: MediaTek asks the US to be able to work with the brand

On August 17, the U.S. Department of Commerce issued a revised version of the ban for Huawei, further limiting Huawei's use of U.S. technology and software to manufacture its products. At the same time, it added 38 subsidiaries of Huawei to the list of entities with a ban on acting as buyers and intermediaries for the brand.

Huawei ban: MediaTek asks the US to be able to work with the brand

After the ban was revised, all of Huawei's suppliers began to produce at full capacity so that they could deliver their products before September 14.

Among them, chip makers using American technology, including MediaTek, will not be able to supply products to Huawei without special permission after the ban goes into effect.

This led to MediaTek filing an application to the United States in compliance with regulations, asking to be able to continue to supply Huawei even after September 15.

Earlier, some insiders had leaked the news that MediaTek would prepare 30 million chip sets for Huawei in the fourth quarter, but they were unable to ship them in time and therefore had to ask for support from OPPO, vivo and Xiaomi. .

In addition to 30 million Huawei chips, the phone giant had also ordered a large number of MediaTek chips.

In fact, as we have already seen with several new Huawei smartphones released this year, the company has increasingly relied on MediaTek chips in preparation for what is happening now. This even allowed MediaTek to overtake Qualcomm in the number of chips shipped, with a share of 38,3%, returning to the top spot in China.

MediaTek previously responded to the ban by stating that the company has always followed the laws and regulations relating to global trade. It is also paying close attention to changes in US export control rules, consulting outside legal counsel to get the latest regulations in real time.

In any case, the US government is very unlikely to allow MediaTek to work with Huawei. This means that Huawei will run out of chips for its devices, something truly unthinkable and in our opinion also unfair.
