Messenger's security breakthrough: after years, end-to-end encryption arrives

Messenger is renewed, introducing a long overdue feature: the end-to-end encryption for messages and calls. This evolution, part of a broader commitment to user data security, ensures that only those directly involved can access the content of messages. Here's a quick look at how this news will affect the use of Messenger.

Messenger evolves: end-to-end encryption becomes the standard, finally

Messenger, owned by Meta, has finally implemented end-to-end encryption for conversations between two people, a novelty awaited since Mark Zuckerberg announced the introduction of encrypted chats. With this technology, only the sender and recipient can see the contents of messages, significantly increasing the privacy and security of communications.

Encrypted chats in Messenger have been available since 2016 as an optional feature, but now, with a long and careful development path, end-to-end encryption becomes the standard for messages and calls between two users. This change reflects Meta's commitment to ensuring greater protection of user data.

Loredana Crisan, Vice President of Messenger, highlighted the hard work of engineers, cryptographers, designers, policy experts and product managers to reconfigure Messenger features from the ground up, ensuring that Using encrypted chats does not compromise existing features, such as custom themes and tailored reactions. However, Crisan also warned that it may take some time for all chats in Messenger to switch to default encryption.

Interestingly, for encrypted chats on Messenger you will need to create a pin, useful for transferring chats to a new device. For now, end-to-end encryption for group chats on Messenger remains an optional feature, while messages on Instagram are still not encrypted by default.

Mark Zuckerberg, in 2019, had expressed the company's vision to move to ephemeral, encrypted messages across its messaging apps, underlining the importance of security and privacy in digital communications. It's been 4 years and finally today end-to-end encryption arrives by default.
