NotebookLM is Google's AI-powered note-taking app

Google just launched a new tool that could revolutionize the way we take notes. Previously known as Project Tailwind, Google's AI-powered notes app has been rebranded NotebookLM and it comes launched today for a small group of users in the United States. Let's see what it is and how it works.

From Tailwind to NotebookLM: a new way to take notes

NotebookLM is not your ordinary note-taking app. In the center is a AI-powered language model, trained only on documents that the user deems important. This means we can have a research virtual assistant who can summarize facts, explain complex ideas, and brainstorm new connections, all based on our hand-picked notes and sources.

The heart of NotebookLM starts with Google Docs. Once we have access to the app, we can select a group of documents and then use NotebookLM to ask questions about them and even create new content with them. For example, we could ask the service to automatically summarize a long document or to turn a video sketch into a script.

Google mainly has students in mind with NotebookLM. You can ask for a summary of notes taken in class or ask to tell us everything that has been said (and written about by us) on a specific historical topic during the semester.

Google has implemented security measures for protect user data. The NotebookLM model has access only to documents that the user chooses to upload and the data is not available to others nor are they used to train new AI models.

NotebookLM is still under development and only available via a waiting list in Google Labs. But with its potential for revolutionize the way we take notes and work with documents, it's no surprise that the system will become a key part of the future of Google Drive.
