Now Playing arrives on all Android: what it is and how to get it

You know Now Playing? It is an interesting service born on Pixel 2 that allows you to automatically recognize a song in the background. Trivial you say, Shazam does the same. In reality it works in a completely different way and the interesting thing is that a developer has managed to bring this feature to all (or almost) Android smartphones. The news comes from XDA Developers but not all that glitters is gold: you need to have it rooted smartphone. But let's see everything in detail.

Now Playing arrives on all Android: it comes from Google Pixel 2 but a Magisk module makes the feature available to all interested parties

Let's first see what Now Playing is. The functionality was born in 2018 on Google Pixel 2 and is immediately very popular with users. This is an exclusive service of this device which allows, thanks to a particular algorithm, to recognize the music in the background. This is not a Google-flavored Shazam, but a feature that allows you to see on the screen the brando that the smartphone perceives in the environment. To understand, just watch this video.

The developer Quinny899 of XDA Developers invented one hybrid mod Xposed and Magisk called "Ambient Music Mod". This completely transfers Google's original Now Playing function to other Android smartphones. For the moment, the functionality is certified to work well on some OnePlus devices. However, at the moment, it may not work for everyone. Let's give the developer some time to run his work.

The Now Playing feature also maintains one history of all the songs detected so that the user can return to view them. While some of the previous Now Playing implementations relied on an active internet connection to do their job, Ambient Music Mod processes everything locally and therefore does not require the Internet. It is reported that it does not consume too much battery either.

As mentioned above, Ambient Music Mod is one hybrid mod Xposed and Magisk, which means you need both frameworks installed on your smartphone. Magisk is required to gain root access on your device, while the Xposed framework allows the mod to hook into the Sound Trigger driver of Qualcomm Snapdragon devices. It goes without saying that the MediaTek smartphones are not compatible with this service.

We refer to the dedicated thread from XDA Developers to know how to install the module. We recommend the procedure only to the most capable as it is necessary to root the smartphone.

The TechToday.it team is released from any liability in case of damage to the smartphone as a result of modding operations.
