OnePlus explains the "lack" of IP68 protection in their smartphones

OnePlus makes smartphones with IP68 certification for protection against water infiltration? Yes and no, it depends on the models. The company's CEO recently on Weibo Pete Lau decided to explain why the brand never talks about the waterproofing of its smartphones nor does it claim any degree of IP protection. According to him, laboratory tests have nothing to do with the actual use of the devices.

That's why OnePlus doesn't advertise IP68 certification in their smartphones - why doesn't it say they're waterproof, if they are?

Last year's OnePlus 8 Pro was officially protected against water infiltration according to IP68 standard, but already in the new models the manufacturer did not openly state this anywhere. But it is noteworthy that the models for the American operator T-Mobile are issued with the indication of the certification. This, unfortunately, only causes confusion and misunderstanding among users

According to Pete Lau, water resistance is one of the few advantages of their products that they have implemented well. However, they are reluctant to talk about it. He explained this with the fact that to get an IP certificate, devices go through a series of laboratory tests, which are very different from how people use smartphones in reality. Here are his words:

"Since the actual usage environment and user experience are very different, it is impossible to pass the" laboratory standards test "

In response, one of the users wrote that his smartphone survived several dives without any problems. Incidentally, this is a thing to be avoid even if the device is IP68 certified: factory defects could be “around the corner”. Ultimately OnePlus disclaims any liability in case something happens to the device, and does not offer users another reason to test the capabilities of smartphones. It is worth noting that other companies, whose devices have an official IP68 certificate, openly state that the water entering the gadget it is not covered by the warranty scenarios.
