Presentation Xiaomi Mi5S and Mi5S Plus

This morning, in addition to the new models of Xiaomi TV Mi 3S, the upgrades of its top range: Mi5S and Mi5S Plus were presented.

Waiting for these devices was great, and the rumors were wasted in the most imaginative hypotheses, although many of them were told.

Let's start talking about Mi5S which is the direct successor smartphone of Mi5.

The most important improvements are surely in the photographic and fingerprint sensors.

The camera is a Sony IMX 378 1 / 2.3 with pixels equal to 1.55 micron, PDAF, 12 Mpx, OIS and focal aperture f / 2.0. Many demo shots, compared to Iphone 6S and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, show the goodness of the sensor surely one step ahead of the predecessor. Obviously, you have been working to improve the photos taken in low light conditions, however, you should consider the decrease in the maximum shooting resolution from 16 to 12 Mpx. 4k Maximum Video Resolution. The front camera is instead of 4 Mpx with Full HD video resolution.

Here are some Mi5S shots compared with the best 2016 cameras, Iphone 6S Plus and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

The fingerprint sensor was developed with the new ultrasound technology, placed under the glass in a dedicated area (where the home button was located) and delimited by a small depression of the fingerprint. This new technology will allow recognition even with wet, dirty hands, etc. in a fraction of a second.

As for the aesthetic side we find the metal instead of glass / ceramic and 4 are the available colors: dark gray, light gray, pink, gold.

The processor is a 821 snapdragon with 530 adreno GPU. Two models presented with 64 and 128 Gb memory ROMs (UFS 2.0), 3 and 4 Gb respectively (LPDDR4) respectively.

Force touch technology (or touch 3d) is also implemented, but only appears on the 4 / 128 Gb model.

The battery switches from 3000 to 3200 mAh with quick charge quick charge 3.0 while the display, again from 5.15 "of diagonal Full HD (1920 x 1080), is much brighter (600 nits).

Featuring NFC, Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n, USB Type C, LTE-FDD / WCDMA / GSM modules.

The dimensions remain almost unchanged and are of 14.5 x 7.3 x 8.2 cm, about 145 Gr of weight.

The prices are respectively 280 Euros for the 64 Gb and 340 Euros for the 128 Gb model.

As regards instead the Mi5S Plus the diagonal grows considerably, it is a phablet by 5.7 "always Full HD 2.5D (550 nits) always made of brushed metal.

The rear camera from 13 Mpx, f / 2.0, OIS, PDAF consists of a dual Sony sensor, one in color and one in black and white (already seen on the Huawei P9) that can take pictures while also managing the depth of field. Always from 4 Mpx the front camera, unchanged video recording features compared to Mi5S.

In this variant we find the fingerprint sensor at the back and in front only the touch keys.

The battery is from 3800 mAh with quick charge charge 3.0.

The dimensions are 15.4 x 7.7 x 8 cm for a weight of about 165 Gr. Considering the very wide diagonal therefore very small.

All the remaining hardware features remain the same as Mi5S.

In this case, the models proposed are always from 64 and 128 Gb of ROM memory while the RAM passes respectively to 4 and 6 Gb. The colors are the same, 340 Euro prices for 64 Gb and 380 for the 128 Gb.

On both versions we will find Android Marshmallow with MIUI 8 interface.

Personally I would have liked less fragmentation, important features such as force touch and dual cameras present on all models and, given the success of Samsung's EDGE format, this peculiarity of the screen. But this was Xiaomi's choice and in the coming days (to be precise September 29) we will see if the sales will prove the Chinese flagship right!

I agree, I too would have been for less fragmentation. Why make two models with a little news in one and a little in the other and not put all the new technological know-how in both by varying only the size of the display? I bought a Mi5 3 + 64 in May and for sure I would not change it for these, the ultrasonic sensor does not change your life and the dual camera if identical to the P9 will not give the desired results. The new sensor of the Mi5S is better for sure… On a smartphone over 12mpx it doesn't make sense. What I would like to point out... Read the rest »
