[Review] Xiaomi Mi4 LTE vs. Meizu Mx4

Even if from poco Meizu has launched the PRO version of the MX4, the "standard" version must be considered in the band "flagship" of the Chinese home and above all because of the consequent drop in price, it is the right time to compare these two terminals: Xiaomi Mi4 and Meizu Mx4.

From the aesthetic point of view, the two terminals propose very different designs, the Mi4 with its flat steel frame offers a slightly angular "feel" but which guarantees a better grip even considering the narrower aspect ratio (16: 9 vs 5: 3). The Meizu Mx4 is also made with a metal frame, but in aluminum, and a more rounded design that returns a feeling of slipperiness and a grip poco perhaps also due to the unusual width which adds to the already generous dimensions.

In common, we find the positioning of the headphone socket (on top) and the loudspeaker that is down, always very sensible choice. The volume balance is on both sides, on the Mi4 right with the on / off button while on the left Mx4 with the power button up. This positioning is somewhat uncomfortable since the top is hard to reach in the "big" terminals, but  that choice is compensated and facilitated by the "knock knock" gesture that re-activates the display with a double tap on the glass. The block can also be forced without the use of the power button, while holding the "home" button.

Below the bonnet we find one first-rate hardware. Xiaomi is pushed by a SnapDragon 801 (Quad core, 2500 MHz) and an Adreno 330 GPU, while for Meizu we have all the power of the 8-core 2200 MHz MediaTek MT6595 with a GPU PowerVR G6200MP4. Two completely different architectures and if we only want to rely on the "brand" we would be tempted to win it at the Xiaomi Qualcomm, in fact Meizu's FlyOS is so well-made and optimized to bring the challenge back to the same step. Only Rams 3gb strongly propose to the Mi4 that has more gigabytes available.

The camera compartment sees in Xiaomi a 13mpx camera with aperture from F1.8, while in the MX4 we find a 20mpx but with an opening from F2.2. Leaving aside the difference of max which as you well know they say well poco of the quality of a shot, I would have expected much better performance, by virtue of the greater aperture, by the Mi4 in low light conditions and instead I must say that even in this respect the Meizu surprised me by making very good photos.

With 5 inches against the 5.36 of Meizu, we find an LCD IPS for both, but Xiaomi "boasts" an enviable density of 441ppi against the meixu 418. The resolution is the same in height (1920) but obviously greater in width on the MX4 due to the different format (1152 vs 1080). Great is the color rendering for both, even though the Meizu offers greater brightness and excels slightly on the viewing angle that allows for a clear reading even if we are at the limit.

Software speech (which however deserves a deepening). Both mounts proprietary and custom versions of Android, Miui6 for Xiaomi and Flyme OS 4 for Meizu. In both cases, we are talking about more mature ROMs (especially the MIUIs) that offer a complete, but simple, and often preferable, user experience to the most confusing Rom of the most well-known brands. As you know, Xiaomi offers weekly updates and most importantly customizations. The FlyMe, which in many ways recalls the MIUI, is characterized by a great simplicity coupled with interesting gestures that however need to be perfected.

Concluding, the major differences are therefore reduced:

- the dimensions in the Mx4 are really generous and maybe not suitable for everyone, especially since the software does not offer special optimizations for so much space on the display.

- the software that although seeing the FlyMe recovering from the MIUI still does not offer that customization and completeness that the MIUI 6.

- at a price that slightly tends to favor Mx4 and over time will do it more.
