Today Samsung not only presented its new flagship devices but also a new photo sensor from 108 megapixel. The company is not new to this kind of sensors and we thought the next photographic lens it would have been much bigger in terms of megapixels. His name is Samsung ISOCELL HM3 and delivers sharper, brighter ultra-high resolution images with support for even faster autofocus and a remarkably wide dynamic range. Let's see all the features in detail.
Samsung ISOCELL HM3 in detail: everything you need to know about the new 108 megapixel proprietary photo sensor
Unveiled today, the Samsung ISOCELL HM3 features a pixel size equal to 0.8 µm and a lens with size 1.33 ″. Technology Super PD Plus uses micro lenses optimized for autofocus that allow you to achieve a accuracy greater than 50% compared to the previous generation sensor. The advanced solution PDAF (Phase Detection Autofocus) helps to maintain sharp focus even on moving subjects and offers optimal results even in low light conditions.

In particular lighting conditions, such as a powerful light beam in a dark environment, the Samsung ISOCELL HM3 relies on Smart ISO Pro, an HDR image processing technology that uses an intra-scene dual conversion gain (iDCG) solution. In a nutshell they come capture high and low ISO images by combining them into one with 12-bit color depth. Also, using the low noise mode improves the 50% light sensitivity, resulting in brighter and clearer images in low light conditions.
The pixel layout in this new sensor is organized in monochrome textures of 3 x 3 pixels. This allows for a grouping in 9-pixel blocks. By combining adjacent pixels into groups of nine, the 108-megapixel sensor simulates a 12 megapixel image sensor with 2.4 micron pixels oversized.
As announced by the company, the sensors Samsung ISOCELL HM3 have already entered mass production. No disclosure on the names of the companies that will use this new sensor. We expect brands like Xiaomi e Oppo they will be in pole position.
