Smartphone shipments will come back up thanks to the strong push of 5G

2020 has not been and will continue to not be the best of years for smartphones. Despite the unattainable peak that some brands have reached, in general the situation is dramatic. The shipments have dropped dramatically and the covid-19 epidemic is the cause. The wallet is also a bit: due to the virus many people have lost their jobs and the smartphone sector, which was one of the main ones to benefit from pre-coronavirus positivity, has been greatly affected. But theIDC has forecast an increase in shipments due to lower costs of 5G technology. Let's go see the details of the report.

Thanks to 5G, global smartphone shipments will see a surge, albeit short, compared to the average for the year: a good sign

THEIDC (International Data Corporation) is the world's leading company specializing in market research, consultancy services and event organization in the ICT and digital innovation sectors. It is the most prestigious agency that deals with forecasts about the market, not only related to technology. According to his latest report written yesterday, the smartphone sector will see a rise in the coming days, mainly after the holidays. This is thanks to the strong pull of technology 5G.

5g smartphone shipments

Smartphone shipments are expected will grow 2.4% yoy in Q4 2020, followed by 4.4% growth in 2021. The market recovery will be fueled by an incredibly rapid recovery of the supply chain and significant incentives from OEMs and channels on new 5G products. IDC expects the global market to grow each year until 2024 with an average five-year growth rate of 1.3%. Ryan Reith, vice president of the program with IDC Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers he has declared:

We have come to the conclusion that, despite continuing blockages and economic worries, consumers in many markets around the world have shifted their spending from things like travel, meals away and leisure to things like consumer electronics.

Despite this, however, the growth expected for China has proved rather slow. Something more was expected but the demand for 5G technology was not as high as hoped. From a technological point of view, 5G is the driving force for the smartphone industry right now. IDC expects shipments of smartphones with this technology to nearly reach 10% of the global volume in 2020 and will grow to 29% in 2024.
