This, according to laboratory data, allows to fully recharge a smartphone in 5 minutes. But there's more: Xiaomi has also introduced the solid state batteries. What are they? How do they work? What are solid state batteries?
Before seeing the company's novelty, we must rightly understand what solid-state batteries are. They are a type of battery that use a solid electrolyte instead of a liquid, as occurs in traditional lithium batteries. These offer several advantages over traditional batteries. For example, they have a higher energy density, which means they can store more energy in a smaller space.
Also, solid state batteries are less prone to energy losses and overheating problems compared to traditional batteries, which makes them safer. However, there are also some challenges associated with using solid state batteries in smartphones. For example, they can be more expensive to produce compared to traditional lithium batteries.
Xiaomi and its solid state batteries
Xiaomi has announced the creation of a solid-state battery technology that not only offers a energy density greater than 1000 Wh/L, but also greatly improves performance and safety in the cold. In the brand's laboratory tests, the use of solid-state batteries resulted in battery energy densities exceeding 1000 Wh/L. Another benefit of a solid-state battery is improved low-temperature performance.
Due to the liquid characteristics of the electrolyte itself, the viscosity increases sharply at low temperatures and the ability to transport of lithium ions is hindered, resulting in rapid discharge. When using solid-state electrolyte, the battery can maintain sufficient conductivity characteristics of lithium at low temperatures. Compared with conventional batteries, the discharge performance of solid-state batteries is improved by more than 20% at a temperature of -20°C.
That said, it's not clear when Xiaomi will be going to introduce in its smartphones but we have an idea: with Xiaomi 14 we could see this revolutionary technology.
