Xiaomi Mi Wireless Charging Pad multi-coil seen closely in the first teardown

At the spring conference for the launch of new Xiaomi products held in China on March 29, the brand launched two new flagship smartphones, the Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro and the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra. In terms of charging accessories, Xiaomi showed the world just how far ahead from the point of view of wireless charging and fast charging, by launching an 80W ultra-high-power air-cooled wireless charger, along with another. charger with multi-coil fast charging which supports charging up to three devices at the same time.

Recently, the wireless charger with multi-coil fast charging has officially gone on sale in Xiaomi's stores in China at a price of 599 yuan, around 75 euros. Confirming once again that Xiaomi is one of the smartphone manufacturers that most promotes the development of wireless charging technology. On the other hand, as we know, Xiaomi has already launched many wireless charging products in recent years, all of a high level and loved by users.

In any case, immediately after it went on sale in China, a Chinese blog managed to get one and completely disassemble it so as to show us every detail.

Apple AirPower concept

But let's start with the concept design, which as some of you know is inspired by Apple's AirPower wireless charger, a product that has been bouncing around for many years and never released by the American brand, which should have allowed us to charge multiple devices at the same time and in any position.

Now, without further ado, let's take a close look at the Xiaomi charger.

The wireless charger comes in a white box, with the Xiaomi logo and the name of the multi-coil wireless fast charging base printed on the top.

At the bottom left of the back of the package there is a sticker with all the product parameters.

Open the package we immediately see the Xiaomi Mi Wireless Charging Pad multi-coil on the top, one end of which has a comfortable grip to extract the charging base.

Under the cardboard we find the charging cable and the wall socket with a power of 120W, as well as other instructions and various certificates.

The charger included in the box is the same 120W fast charger as the Mi 10 Extreme Commemorative Edition (Mi 10 Ultra).

The parameters of 120W wall charger include:

  • Model: MDY-12-ED
  • Input: 100-120V ~ 50 / 60Hz 1,7A
  • Output: 5V3A, 9V3A, 11V6A, 20V4.8A
  • Input: 220-240V ~ 50 / 60Hz 1,7A
  • Output: 5V3A, 9V3A, 11V6A, 20V6A

We also know that the product has passed 3C certification and Qualcomm QC3.0 certification.

The included cable is USB Type-A to USB Type-C and supports a maximum current flow of 6A.

Returning to Xiaomi's multi-coil wireless charging base, this one appears to be made of silicone material, with an aluminum alloy bottom shell and a PC plastic frame.

In the photo above we can see the top surface up close with its very similar finish to that of the leather.

The lower part is instead designed with a curved surface, which from the side resembles a boat.

Always on the side we see the presence of an LED indicator, while on the other side, or the back, we find the USB Type-C power port with a rubber cover to avoid possible interference and a groove for a more stable connection.

Finally, there is a large non-slip pad on the bottom, the Xiaomi branding is printed in the center, and the product parameters are printed. These include:

  • Model: MDY-13-EJ
  • Interface category: USB-C
  • Working temperature: 0 ℃ -35 ℃
  • Product size: 232,4 * 100 * 15,1mm
  • Input parameters: 9-20V, 6A max
  • Output parameters: single device: 20W max
  • Dual device: 2 * 20W max
  • Three devices: 3 * 20W max
  • Total power: 60W max

Let's now go to the actual teardown of the device which begins with the removal of the lower anti-slip pad. The cover can be opened by removing the four screws.

Once the wireless charger is opened we see a cover with a graphite heat dissipation film to reduce the local temperature rise.

The graphite film is wrapped with an insulating plastic film and the 19 coils underneath are additionally covered with high temperature resistant electrical tape.

The charging base coils are divided into three levels and arranged in triangular shapes. There are 7 coils on the bottom layer and 6 coils on the middle and top layer.

There is also a thermistor on the coils to detect the temperature. Coils which are attached with double sided tape.

Under the coils there is a magnetic conductive sheet, an impregnating aluminum layer and the printed circuit.

Finally, the back of the circuit board is covered with thermally conductive silica gel, which is used to dissipate heat from the circuit components.

What to say, the teardown confirms that the Xiaomi Mi Wireless Multi-Coil Charging Pad is a truly special product and all that remains is to congratulate Xiaomi for being successful where even Apple has failed.
