According to the report, the brand regularly conducts materiality analyzes to determine the issues that should be focused on within the sustainability strategy.

In 2020, Xiaomi set up a environmental and social governance structure (ESG) at all levels of the company, including the board of directors, management and delivery teams. Lei Jun, President and CEO of Xiaomi said:

Since we created this company in 2010, Xiaomi has been committed to improving the world we live in. In 2020, we joined the United Nations Global Compact and pledged to abide by its ten principles of corporate responsibility. The report describes how Xiaomi has worked to incorporate environmental protection into its product design and manufacturing. For example, there was one 60% reduction in the use of plastic for packaging of the Mi 10T and Mi 10T Pro series. By the end of 2021, Xiaomi aims to achieve a higher percentage of plastic reduction in the packaging of its new products in Europe. 

The report also highlights Xiaomi's ability to make energy savings an important feature of over 40 types of consumer products. As the report documents, the products are guaranteed to be fully compliant with all environmental regulations and security of the countries in which they are sold. Including CE, REACH, RoHS and WEEE directives.

Xiaomi underlines the crucial role played by innovation in sustainability and in addressing global issues. For example, as part of its commitment to contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the brand has become a partner in developing a system of early warning for earthquakes. In China, and soon in other countries with seismic zones, smartphones running the MIUI system (11 and above) and Mi TVs can alert users in seconds of an earthquake occurrence

These alerts provide information about the nearest emergency shelter, emergency contact details, medical contacts, and rescue information to help in a critical situation. During 2020, Xiaomi MIUI Earthquake Alert has detected 29 earthquakes above magnitude 4.0 and issued more than 9.4 million alarms.

Throughout 2020, Xiaomi also played an active role in the fight against COVID-19. In March 2020, it has donated tens of thousands of FFP3 masks to the Italian government and helped residents in the severely affected Veneto region. It also sent supplies to France, the UK and Poland.

When schools in Europe have had to close and switch to online classes, the Spanish division has donated 1.000 smartphones to the Ministry of Education and distributed them to children all over the country. As of July 15, 2020, the Beijing Xiaomi Foundation had donated medical supplies to a total of 14 countries including Italy, Spain, Japan, Korea, Indonesia and Myanmar for a total of nearly € 1 million.
