Fitbit: FDA kicks off rate monitoring for arrhythmia

It was early January of last year when Google formalized the purchase of Fitbit. Since that moment there have been many innovations such as the presentation of Luxury, High-end fitness tracker with a refined design, but also, unfortunately, goodbye to access through the Facebook account. But today we have something new. Google announced to have obtained the authorization from Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to implement a algorithm capable of identifying arrhythmias or rather atrial fibrillation. Let's see the details.

Google has received the yes from the FDA: Fitbit's algorithm to monitor atrial fibrillation is ok. We can officially start!

Despite being an extremely cool tool, this feature isn't new and for a long time we find it on Apple devices. There are many cases of users who have reported the arrival of medical assistance after the Apple Watch has sent a notification to those in charge. As Fitbit explains, the authorization allows accessories from the to monitor continuously the heart rate and of warn if signs of arrhythmia are detected, which is irregular heartbeat due to a genetic condition or health problem.

According to the information, the monitoring will take place automatically when the user sleeps or is at rest via the optical sensor placed in the lower part of the wearables. Despite this it seems it is also possible to activate the measurement via the settings. In tests performed, Fitbit accuracy was 98% compared to electrocardiogram (ECG) devices. This result demonstrates high reliability in the algorithm developed by Fitbit.

For now we still don't know when the feature will arrive at everyone and not even the compatible smartwatch and smartband models with it. More details should emerge in the coming weeks.
