Gmail for Android is now a chat: everything is simpler!

Gmail for Android is testing an all-new user interface (UI) that transforms the way users respond to emails, making it more similar to the experience offered by instant messaging apps. The update being tested (via AndroidPolice) introduces a chat style message box at the bottom of received emails. This innovation allows you to compose replies more easily, without having to scroll to the end of the email.

Gmail for Android changes style: now it looks like a chat

The text box of the new UI expands and moves to the center of the screen when tapped, maximizing the space available for text, while keeping the original email visible. Gmail, being at the center of all Google Workspace tools, is constantly trying to improve the service.

Sometimes this involves merging services with similar or overlapping features, as we've seen with Google Meet and Duo. Now, Gmail is adopting a similar approach for regular emails too in the Android app.

Replying to emails usually requires clicking “Reply" or "Reply to all“, insert a subject line, type a response which usually includes a greeting and a signature. The Gmail update makes this process more modern and simple, taking inspiration from the best chat-style email apps on Android.

The new message box, which replaces the three large buttons for “Reply","Reply to all"and "Submit", appears permanently at the bottom and doesn't require scrolling to the bottom of the email. There is a paperclip icon on the left side, for attaching files.

Additionally, there's an expand button that opens the message compose window to full screen (as it was before) useful for long messages or detailed replies. Outside the text field, on the right, Google has placed the emoji button for quick access to the emoji selection.

Tapping the text box moves it closer to the center of the screen, just like it does in a messaging app, maximizing the space available for text. This approach keeps the content of the email you are replying visible, making it easier to compose short replies. Once you've entered content into the message box, the emoji button can be replaced by a “Send” button on the right side.

When will the update arrive

This update appears to be a Server-side testing by Google and is not yet visible to all users. Further official clarification on the reason behind this change in the UI is awaited, but having a persistent message bar offers the same feeling of comfort and ease associated with instant messaging apps.
