One of the best perks of the China version is the system's ability to warn in advance if an earthquake is coming. We saw this functionality with TVs over a year ago. However, this feature is not only present on the TV skin but even on smartphones. And it works so well that it has saved a life (perhaps more than one) in China today.

At 16:06 this afternoon, an earthquake of 4.3 magnitude occurred in Luanzhou City, Hebei Province. The damage was felt up to 150 km away as far as Tianjin. But beyond that, the interesting thing is that the MIUI predicted the earthquake by 10 seconds. On the social Weibo a user, owner of Redmi K40 (POCO F3 from us) thanked Xiaomi for immediately integrating this feature on the smartphone. As we said, unfortunately, it is available only in China.
But what is this useful feature and how does it work? it was first developed jointly by Xiaomi and from Chengdu High-Tech Disaster Reduction Institute. Not long ago, an earthquake occurred in Yibin, Sichuan province, and again a Xiaomi smartphone successfully issued an earthquake warning tens of seconds in advance. That was the the first case in which the brand has used the alert service.
The system created by Xiaomi uses the EEW early warning principle (Earthquake Early Warning). This system takes into account the different propagation speed of the types of seismic waves to be able to warn the population of the arrival of the great quake with a small advance. THE two types of seismic waves are those of type P and those of type S, the former are of smaller amplitude, are faster and reach a speed approximately double compared to the more ruinous S waves and subsequent surface waves.
