OnePlus Open tested by JerryRigEverything: will it survive?

OnePlus has once again proven itself to be one of the most innovative companies in the market with the launch of its first foldable device, the OnePlus Open. It is a phone that transforms into a tablet, thanks to a flexible 7,6-inch internal display and a 6,7-inch external one. But how resistant is this revolutionary smartphone? To find out, Zack, the famous YouTuber behind JerryRigEverything, put it to the test with its usual durability tests.

OnePlus Open tested by JerryRigEverything: will it survive?

The first test concerns the scratch resistance of the two screens. The external display, like all glass ones, scratches at level 6 on the Mohs scale, with deeper grooves at level 7. The internal display, however, is similar to that of all other foldable devices: it is covered by a film protective plastic, which scratches at level 2 and has deeper grooves at level 3. This means that you must be careful not to expose the internal display to sharp or abrasive objects, such as keys, coins or sand.

The second test concerns the heat resistance of the two screens. The external display resists contact with an open flame for approximately 25 seconds before the pixels turn white. This is fairly standard behavior for OLED screens. The internal display, however, sees its protective plastic film burn in about five seconds. This means that you should avoid exposing the internal display to excessive heat sources, such as lighters, candles or stoves.

The third test concerns the bending resistance of the phone. The OnePlus Open survives pressure from both directions when folded. Not only that, but it also survives pressure applied in the wrong direction when open. After being subjected to this test, the phone does not close as perfectly as before, but remains 100% functional.

Let's note that OnePlus hasn't had a good track record with these flex tests as of late, and so it's surprising to see that what many might consider its most vulnerable device to this type of test is actually its most resilient.
