Xiaomi EV Technology Launch

This is the first official event of Xiaomi EV, which opened its Weibo account only yesterday and has already reached over 68.000 followers. The president and CEO of Xiaomi, Lei Jun, specified on Weibo that the conference will not concern products, but only technology, denying the rumors that indicated the launch of the first electric car model, SU7, just on December 28th.

Xiaomi EV follows the practice of many car manufacturers, who organize several events before the official debut of a new model. The first is usually a technology launch, followed by a pre-sale launch, and finally an official launch. This practice helps create greater anticipation and interest in the months leading up to launch, which in turn drives higher orders.

The first Xiaomi EV model will be a medium-large sedan, with length, width and height of 4.997 mm, 1.963 mm, 1.440/1.455 mm and a wheelbase of 3.000 mm, as shown by a previous registration. These dimensions are larger than those of the Tesla Model 3 and the Nio ET5, two direct competitors in the Chinese electric car market.

Il SU7 will two battery options, 73,6 kWh and 101 kWh, supplied by Chinese battery giants BYD and CATL respectively. There 73,6 kWh battery will offer two ranges of 628 km and 668 km, while that from 101 kWh will offer 750 km and 800 km. The SU7 will also have a level 3 autonomous driving system, which will allow the driver to delegate some functions to the vehicle.

Xiaomi has big ambitions for its first model, and Lei Jun said in a CCTV interview earlier this month that he entered the automotive industry with the aim of winning. The company plans to invest 10 billion dollars (about 8,5 billion euros) in the electric car business over the next ten years. The official launch of the SU7 is scheduled for the first half of 2024, followed by a new model in each of the next three years. Xiaomi aims to sell 900.000 electric cars in these three years.
