Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra: This is how the incredible 50W wireless charging works

Among the many innovative features that we find on board the latest Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra, the wireless charging with power of 50W is definitely one of the most interesting. In fact, we are talking about enormous power if we take into account that it is a wireless recharge. In fact, it is more performing than the wired charging of many smartphones on sale, including several flagships. But how does this technology work? How does it manage to reach 50W? Well, today Xiaomi explained it to us, let's find out together!

Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra: This is how the incredible 50W wireless charging works

Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra 50W Wireless Charging

Let's start by explaining that the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra adopts a more efficient charging architecture than other smartphones on the market. On the one hand, it minimizes the complexity of the wireless charging process, and on the other hand, it improves the conversion efficiency of the charging chip. This happens thanks to a more direct 4: 2 single-level charging structure, which can effectively reduce energy loss during the charging process when compared with the conventional 2: 1 double-level charging scheme.

When using high-power wireless charging, the traditional 2: 1 double-level charging scheme requires a two-stage charge pump to lower the voltage step by step. Any reduction means a loss of energy.

So, assuming that the energy received by the coil is 100 and the conversion efficiency of the charge pump is 97%, without considering other losses, theoretically the energy received by the battery of the conventional smartphone is 100 x 97% x 97% ≈ 94.

The 4: 2 direct charging architecture of the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra requires only one step-down, without considering other losses, ergo the theoretical energy received by the battery is 100 x 97% ≈97.

Furthermore, by optimizing the charging link structure and reducing the voltage transformation level, it is possible to effectively reduce the energy loss and improve the overall charging efficiency.

Along with the 4: 2 architecture, the Mi 10 Ultra also uses a brand new custom charging pump. In the past, the conversion efficiency of the charge pump chips was around 95% / 96%, while in the previous generation of Xiaomi's flagship it was 97%. This time the conversion efficiency of the charge pump has been further increased to over 98,5%, so we have a higher charge efficiency and lower losses, which of course also reduce energy consumption.

Secondly, the more efficient charge pump can reduce the heat generated during the charging process, consequently the lower temperature further prolongs the life of the high-power charge and improves the charging speed.

But it doesn't stop there, because the smartphone also uses parallel dual charging technology that splits the high voltage current into a low voltage double charge, reducing the impedance of the charging path, the heat of the charging path and improving the overall conversion efficiency, as well as charging stability.

Obviously, Xiaomi then optimized the battery, the charging method, the selection of components, the charging coil and even the wireless charger.

As we learned a few days ago, the Mi 10 Ultra uses a brand new double butterfly string battery with two 2250 mAh cells connected in series, equivalent to 4500 mAh. Series butterfly battery design can double the charging power with the same input current. The newly developed butterfly packaging method also has a smaller protection circuit than the traditional side-by-side double string battery, thus manages to bring greater battery capacity to the same volume.

In any case, returning to the coil for wireless charging, Xiaomi confirmed the use of a 5-layer, multi-wire nanocrystalline winding material. This not only makes the magnetic field of the wireless charging more densely concentrated around the receiving coil, but effectively reduces the energy loss of the coil during the charging process and greatly improves the energy transmission efficiency.

Finally, with the customized wireless charging receiving chip, the electromagnetic conversion efficiency of the wireless charging process is higher, and the smartphone's wireless charging receiving ability is improved.

What can I say, Xiaomi seems to be one of the most advanced companies in recent years, pushing above all on fast charging, both wired to the incredible power of 120W (even if Realme will give a hard time with the Realme X7 Pro Ultra 125W) and the wireless one with its 50W which will surely be difficult to overcome by other brands in the near future.
