The smartphone market is increasingly heading towards the production of devices with support for the 5G network. The further we go the more i 4G devices will disappear, as is happening with 3G. Xiaomi and 5G they have a very close relationship: in fact, the research fields of the brand are multifaceted and often concern this technology. Xiaomi was invited to participate in three projects of research convened by 3GPP, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project, a key international organization in the development of mobile communication standards.

These three projects were approved as part of 3GPP Release-18. It is a system for providing developers with one stable platform for the implementation of features. Xiaomi welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with other industry leaders and partners to contribute to the development of the global mobile communications industry. Below is a brief overview of each project:
- the first project aims at solve the problem of self-interference wireless inside the equipment. At this time, multiple wireless communication signals coexist simultaneously in a smartphone, such as 2/3/4 / 5G cellular networks, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and satellite positioning. All require separate wireless transceivers in the same device. THE transceivers also interfere with each other physically and, for users, interference can affect the sound quality of voice calls and the strength of a device's Wi-Fi connection. 3GPP research on IDC technology will facilitate coordination between terminals and networks for avoid mutual interference of electromagnetic waves, allowing devices to use multiple wireless modules at the same time more smoothly. It will improve the user experience and make future smartphones with more features compatible.

- the second project is called Ranging Based Services and Sidelink Positioning and aims to allow technology to measure relative distance and angles. This has a wide range of applications including for smart homes and offices, smart cities, object detection, content sharing and guide independent. Xiaomi and its partners will investigate how to use this technology on licensed, unlicensed or ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) frequencies
- the third project is called Satellite Access Phase 2 and aims at solve the problem of discontinuous coverage of satellite signals, a problem related to the lack of satellite coverage. This project will ensure that after a gap in satellite coverage, core 5G networks allow for temporary storage of cell phone data in the uplink and downlink and ensure low power consumption of the phone until the phone returns to an area with satellite coverage.
