A couple of months ago, Google has launched the Pixel 7a, a mid-range smartphone. The device promises to offer high performance and a quality camera at an affordable price. But how does the Pixel 7a perform in practice? To find out, the well-known website DxOMark put the phone through a series of extensive tests to assess its photography and video capabilities.

The Pixel 7a achieved an overall score of 133 points, placing it 28th in the overall DxOMARK ranking, behind the Pixel 6 Pro (134 points), the Huawei Mate 40 Pro+ (135 points) and the Pixel 7 (140 points). The phone achieved the same points as many other high-end models, such as the iPhone 14 (13 points), the Samsung Galaxy S23 (133 points) and even surpassed the Xiaomi 13 (130 points).
According to DxOMARK, the Pixel 7a delivered excellent performance for its class in its tests and showed some improvements over its predecessor Pixel 6a. The Pixel 7a features less sophisticated hardware than the Pixel 7 Pro and lacks a dedicated camera, but uses the same Google Tensor G2 chipset as the other Pixel 7 series devices.
Overall, image results were pretty close to the Pixel 7, especially in the photo and zoom categories, but the 7a didn't exactly match the more expensive model in terms of video detail. In static imaging the testers were particularly pleased with the 7a's color rendition and skin tone. While zooming, the 7a performed well at the ultra-wide end of the zoom range, but the lack of a dedicated telephoto lens meant that telezoom image detail wasn't quite on par with some competitors, such as the Xiaomi 13. In video mode, the Pixel 7a performed generally well in most conditions, but had some weaknesses in terms of color rendition and detail.
Despite some minor drawbacks, the Google Pixel 7a is an easy recommendation for anyone who wants great camera performance in the upper mid-range segment. The phone offers a smooth and intuitive user experience thanks to the Android 13 operating system and the built-in Google Assistant functionality.
