Google Pixel 8 will change the game for Android updates

A few days ago we "dared" to say that Xiaomi is on par with Samsung in terms of updates. Well, but the fight is not between just two teams, but much wider. While Apple's iPhone series has always had the edge in this aspect, Google is making strides to fill this gap with its Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. According to the latest information, Google plans to exceed Samsung's current policy, offering a longer life span thanks 5 updates of the operating system.

Google Pixel 8 will have 5 Android updates

Until now, Samsung has promised four years of updates of the operating system for its devices, starting with the Galaxy S21 series. However, Google is planning to go further, aiming to match and perhaps surpass the longevity offered by Apple. This is a significant step, especially considering that Android devices in general have always had fewer years of support than their iOS counterparts.

The role of the Tensor chip

One reason Google can afford to make this bold move is its own Tensor chip. Even though the first three generations of this chip are based largely on Samsung Exynos, Google is taking complete control of its hardware, just like Nvidia did with its Tegra X1 and X1+ chips. This control allows Google to offer longer and more stable updates. This is why the Mountain View company will be able to afford to give 5 major updates to its Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro smartphones.

Comparison with Apple

Apple has always had a longevity edge, with devices like the iPhone 6S still receiving security updates nearly eight years after their release. Google is working to narrow this gap with the Pixel 8, aiming to offer a number of years of OS updates that can compete directly with Apple's.

Obviously, the quality of updates it is just as important as their quantity. For example, Samsung has taken a quarterly approach towards the end of its devices' lifecycles. Google, however, seems determined to keep a steady stream of meaningful updates, making the Pixel 8 an excellent choice for anyone looking for a long-lasting Android device.

In short, the Google Pixel 8 is intended to change the rules of the game when it comes to OS updates on Android devices. Not only does it promise to surpass Samsung, it also aims to compete with the longevity offered by Apple. If Google keeps this promise, the Pixel 8 could become the new reference standard for Android smartphones and, why not, force companies like Qualcomm and MeidaTek to take action in terms of "access keys" to SoCs.
