Google beats Apple with Video Boost: what it is and how it works

Google has made a significant breakthrough in the world of mobile videography, introducing an innovative function, Video Boost, with the launch of its new smartphone Pixel 8Pro. With this move, the company has set its sights on the throne long occupied by Apple in this specific sector. Here's what this feature is, how it works and why it's really significant for the mobile branch.

What is Pixel 8 Pro Video Boost

Video Boost isn't just a feature of the Pixel 8 Pro. It's a technology that incorporates HDR+ principles, a well-known method for improving image quality. While shooting a video at 4K resolution at 30 frames per second, imagine yourself shooting 1.800 photos in one minute and to merge shots with different exposures for each of them.

The result? A video that boasts wide dynamic range, finely delineated details and impeccable color accuracy, with a particular emphasis on the reproduction of skin tones.

A visual examination between the video quality obtained with the Pixel 8 Pro with Video Boost and that of the iPhone 15 Pro Max highlights a remarkable contrast, providing a tangible look at how Google's new feature performs in the real world of video recording.

How it works

Creating a high-quality video with Video Boost doesn't end when you finish recording. While the new processor G3 tensioner of the device handles a considerable part of the processing, the heart of the “magic” lies in Google's servers. Once the video is uploaded, specialized algorithms come into play, performing further enhancements and optimizations.

The user then receives a notification on their Pixel 8 Pro as soon as the optimized video is ready to be viewed. Basically we can say that Video Boost acts like a program in post production, removing some load locally (on your device at the time of use) by ensuring that the video itself is modified on Google's servers. This is the big news.

Who can use Video Boost

While the Tensor G3 processor is also a component of the standard Pixel 8, the feature Video Boost remains exclusive to the Pro model. But why? In an interview, Sonia Jobanputra, Google's director of product, offered a somewhat cryptic explanation. The cost of cloud infrastructure to run Video Boost is one of the key elements, and this influenced the decision to make this feature available only for the Pixel 8 Pro.

However, Sonia hinted at the possibility that, in the future, Pixel 8 owners could also benefit from this revolutionary technology. It is clear that this functionality, in any case, will remain exclusive for the brand's devices of the eighth generation (at most you can get to the Pixel 7 Pro). It is obvious that other brands such as Xiaomi, realme, Oppo, OnePlus and company will not be able to take advantage of Video Boost.
