Review of Xiaomi Redmi Notes 3 Pro

As often happens, Xiaomi usually offers multiple variants of its own smartphone, including enhanced versions. This is the case of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 which, a few months after its presentation, underwent a hardware update, giving life to the Redmire Xiaomi Note Pro 3 | Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro officially presented |. Today we will make a review of it lasting a quick comparison with its "base" version Xiaomi Redmi Notes 3 and Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 officially presented |, so you can get a clear idea on which version to choose.

Before you begin, let's remember that one of the main differences that differentiates between these two versions is the processor that is mounted. In fact, in the "base" version we find a MediaTek Helio X10 while in the "Pro" version we find it Snapdragon 650 | Xiaomi Redmi Notes 3 or Pro: Which one to choose? |.

As far as packaging and aesthetics are concerned, there is no difference whatsoever (not even the name "Pro" appears), so we find:

  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro (of course)
  • Quick Guide (in Chinese)
  • Tool to extract the slot for the two SIM / SIM and micro-SD (new)
  • Wall Battery Charger with 5V and 2A Outputs
  • USB Cable

We find the real differences inside the device itself, that is at the hardware level:

Specifications

So, ignoring the net advantage of the Snapdragon 650 compared to the MediaTek Helio X10 already seen in our previous article (visible here), the device does not show the slightest sign of lag or frame rate drop in elaborate games such as Asphalt 8 (with details set to maximum) and Mortal Kombat and, above all, in everyday use. Furthermore, the device under stress does not heat up, especially if you consider that it has a metal back cover.

The camera represents another strong point of the Pro version, as (together with the processor that has an advanced graphics processing chip) it allows the capture of very detailed photos, with high speed (focus in 0,1s) thanks to the PDAF (Phase Detection Auto Focus). Here are some HDR shots taken respectively, under good brightness, low brightness, and macro.

Even though they have the same battery with identical amperage, the battery life is longer in the Pro version than in the "base" version, as the Snapdragon 650 has significantly lower power consumption and much better performance than the MediaTek Helio X10! In fact, according to the user who performed the various tests, the smartphone arrives without problems in the evening with a very heavy use, reaching the beauty of about 12 hours screen turned on about 15 hours active phone and Wi-Fi always on.

While under 4G, it has been able to cover 8 shutter times over Xiaomi Mi 4, which makes it less than 3. The sound is very good compared to the "base" version of both the main back speaker and the headphone cap, with a clearer and cleaner sound. Additionally, we have to consider that the Pro version also has VoLTE (Voice over LTE) function, that is, the ability to make voice calls via the 4G connection, which the "base" version does not have. Finally, the Pro version is already on the launch MIUI v7.1 with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop while the "base" version currently has the same version as the MIUI but still stops at Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.

In conclusion, this Pro version has no weaknesses and for being a mid-range it does not fare badly at all. The only drawback, if we want to consider it this way, is the price which, inevitably, goes to increase (prices vary according to the versions that you want to compare) but which still remain very competitive compared to the competition (with the same hardware) .
