In the previous months, Xiaomi had said publicly that she intended to release an update that she finally brought the DC dimming feature on the last Xiaomi Mi 9. Xiaomi had also promised that the update would arrive later this month and so it was yesterday evening 30 April (MIUI 9.4.30).
It was announced by Zhang Guoquan, the director of software development for smartphones, directly on the Chinese Weibo social network. Guoquan wrote "DC dimming technology for Xiaomi Mi 9 is finally available. If no bugs are found after May 1st, you will find the update on the stable version of the ROM, so that even users with greater eye sensitivity will have fun with the device. In the future, we will bring this technology to all other smartphones with an AMOLED screen.
Xiaomi Mi 9: DC dimming officially arrives in the developer
Zhang Guoquan then announced that the DC Dimming technology on board the Xiaomi Mi 9 is different from that adopted by other manufacturers. Traditionally a method called "mask + dither" is used, ie a mask (software) applied to the screen which decreases its brightness. However, this technology has its downsides, for example the gray scale worsens considerably, the screen resolution seems to decrease and there is a feeling of graininess of the display.
On the Xiaomi Mi 9 a combination of some features integrated in Qualcomm chips and AMOLED screen technology is instead adopted. This allows you to decrease the brightness of the screen simply through the flow of current that runs through it. So with less current the display will be less bright but no detail will be lost with greater display clarity.
Finally, Zhang Guoquan invited everyone to compare the Mi 9 with other devices on the market equipped with DC Dimming, especially with the brightness set to minimum and to compare the colors on the screen.
The DC Dimming mode is now available in the settings and will activate automatically as the brightness decreases.
