Xiaomi Mi Max vs. ZTE Nubia Z11 Max: A Phabletan Match

Last day the Chinese company ZTE made some of its devices official, including a phablet ready to compete with the Xiaomi Mi Max, the Nubia Z11 Max. This statement is due to the fact that this device has a lot in common (on paper) with the "full" variant of the Xiaomi phablet, therefore we propose a theoretical comparison between these two phablets and see what are the real similarities / differences between them.

Design and Display

When comparing two devices, the first thing that catches the eye is the aesthetics. Both are relatively thin and sport a very premium design, with the Xiaomi Mi Max having an entirely metal body with a rounded edge at the rear, while the ZTE Nubia Z11 Max has a mixed body between aluminum (side frame) and glass (back cover). However, both glasses of the Nubia Z11 Max have 2.5D technology (rounded at the edges) but in contrast the Mi Max has a Gorilla Glass 4 front glass, while the Nubia Z11 Max has a Gorilla Glass 3. Both have a display with full-HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) but differ in the diagonal and in the type of panel. In fact, the Nubia Z11 Max has a 6 "diagonal with a pixel density of 368 ppi and a panel with Super AMOLED technology, while the Mi Max has a 6,44" diagonal with a density of 342 ppi and a panel with IPS LCD technology. Both are available in three colors, one of which is in common (gold) while the other two are different and are respectively white and black for the ZTE and silver and dark gray for the Xiaomi. Moving on to dimensions and weight, we find:

Z11 Max: 159,15 x 82,25 x 7,4 mm and 185 grams

We Max: 173,1 x 88,3 x 7,5 mm and 203 grams

Specifications

Having examined the outside, now it's the turn to compare what's inside these two phablets. Recalling that we have considered the top variant of the Xiaomi Mi Max, both have the current best Qualcomm mid-range CPU, the Snapdragon 652 (4 cores A72 and 4 cores A53), with Adreno 510 GPU, associated with 4GB of RAM memory . However, the Nubia Z11 Max stops at "only" 64GB of internal memory against the 128GB of the Mi Max but both can be expanded via micro-SD.

The first real big difference is found in photography, as the Nubia are known for their great photographic skills. In fact, even if they have the same resolution (16MP) at the rear, the Nubia Z11 Max features motorized closed-loop autofocus, PDAF, f / 2.0 focal aperture and protective sapphire crystal. In addition, there are other advanced technologies regarding the rear camera such as the Neovision 5.9 technology developed by the company itself, pixel isolation (DTI), software image stabilization and photographic noise removal. The Xiaomi Mi Max has a 16MP camera with f / 2.0 focal aperture, PDAF, real-time filters (also the ZTE) and 5P lenses. However, they both have dual bi-tone LED flashes. At the front we find in the ZTE an 8MP camera with f / 2.4 focal aperture and 80 ° wide-angle lens, while in Xiaomi a 5MP camera with f / 2.0 focal aperture and 85 ° wide-angle lens.

As for the battery amperage, the Nubia Z11 Max has a 4000 mAh battery, while the Mi Max has a 4850 mAh one and both support the Quick Charger 3.0 (fast charging). Both have the classic connectivity of all current smartphones (Bluetooth, dual-band Wi-Fi, 4G, etc.) but, in addition to this, the Mi Max also has an infrared sensor and NFC.

Another relevant difference in favor of the Nubia Z11 Max is the presence of a dedicated Hi-Fi chip with its amplifier, together with a Dolby decoder (Dolby 7.1 audio). Furthermore, the latter has a Type-C connector compared to the classic Type-B of the Xiaomi Mi Max. Finally, the ZTE has the custom interface Nubia 2.9.9 based on Android Lollipop, while the Xiaomi has the MIUI 7 (MIUI 8 ) based on Android Marshmallow.

Price and Conclusions

Since we have taken into consideration the top variant of the Xiaomi Mi Max, both have the same and identical list price, i.e. 1999 Yuan which correspond to about € 268, but if the Mi Max can already be purchased, the same cannot be said for the Nubia Z11 Max which will be available from June 16th.

In conclusion, both devices are very interesting and the differences are relatively few (but relevant). Therefore, for the same price, if you are interested in a smartphone with a large battery and a large display (without forgetting the great software support), go to the Xiaomi Mi Max, while if you want a moderately large display, a good camera (to be tested) and an integrated Hi-Fi system, definitely opt for the ZTE Nubia Z11 Max.
