Review - OnePlus 8 Vs OnePlus 8 Pro what are the real differences (coupon inside)

Never before has this year OnePlus brought its "base" model closer to the Pro model, thus creating many more doubts, compared to the past, on which of the two to buy. Having tried them both, I want to report my user experience and my considerations on the real differences that we could notice in the everyday use of the two models in question.

Just read the data sheets to understand that the HW are really very similar, and some differences that are there are not so decisive in the possible choice of one or the other device. Let's see them in detail:

CPU - GPU - MEMORIES

Both are equipped with the best performing processor and currently the best processor on the market, the Qualcomm SD 865 supported by an Adreno 650 GPU. 5G connectivity and two memory cuts for both: 8Gb Ram + 128Gb Rom and 12Gb Ram + 256Gb Rom. Integrated memory the very fast UFS 3.0 2-Lane but on the Pro model we will find the best performing Ram memory Lpddr5 which is preferred to Lpddr4x instead present on the normal model. Let's say, however, from the tests I have carried out, that you will not find any difference in use in any even more demanding work situation: games, multi tasking, web scrolling, opening applications, installing applications, etc. everything will be performed with the same execution speed . So I give them on par

BATTERY - AUTONOMY

On OnePlus 8 there is a battery from 4300mAh while on OnePlus 8 Pro one from 4510mAh, if both a rapid recharge “warp charge” 30T that will allow you a very fast charge, from 0-100% in poco more than 60 minutes. Battery life is FINALLY excellent on both smartphones. I finally say because all the OnePlus I previously tested (from 5 onwards) did not shine in this aspect. Even with intended use you will arrive in the evening with a comfortable 35-40% battery, with an average use you will also be able to cover 2 days. As we know this is a bit of a minefield, susceptible to many variables. In my tests I used 2 sims (vodafone-windtre) and an active Wi-Fi connection for half a day. I can be absolutely satisfied and to return to our comparison I did not detect substantial differences between the 2 (the additional 210mAh of the Pro compensates for the diagonal of the display and the higher refresh rate). Here too a nice draw.

DISPLAY

For some time, OnePlus devices have stood out for the quality of their "Fluid Amoled" displays and this beautiful tradition has continued on the 8 series as well. OnePlus 8 mounts a curved display from 6.55" with definition Full HD + (2400 x 1080 pixels 402 ppi) and an update rate of 90Hz. The 8 Pro has a curved display instead 6.78" with definition QHD (3168 x 1440 pixels 513 ppi) and refresh rate up to 120Hz. On paper, there would seem to be a difference, but in practice, even here they are absolutely not noticed. Put side by side it is really impossible to say which is the QHD and which is working at 120Hz. I now consider these specifications a purely marketing thing and nothing more. If this difference is imperceptible by keeping them side by side, imagine how it can be having only one in use at a time (as in the end we will all do). On OnePlus 8 there is the possibility to select the frequency on 90Hz or 60Hz, on the 8 Pro 120Hz or 60Hz without the middle way 90Hz. I remember, however, that the refresh will reach the maximum only in certain situations, when required and not for example by browsing the gallery or reading a web page. For the Pro model there is also the possibility of lowering the resolution to FullHD + to save some battery (savings that I have not noticed). That said, even here we put a nice "X" sign on the Display challenge. Ah, sure ... one is bigger and one a little less .. but the usual speech is worth, using one at a time you won't notice a difference.

DIMENSIONS - WEIGHT (portability)

OnePlus 8 weight only 180Gr and has the following dimensions: 160.2 mm, mm 72.9, 8.0 mm therefore being, in my opinion, the perfect smartphone! Light, excellent battery, perfect to be challenged, I had not been so well for years. OnePlus 8 Pro weighs 199Gr and measure 165.3mm, 74.3mm, 8.5mm. Here, this is a difference that can lead you to choose one or the other. The weight and these additional millimeters make the Pro definitely less manageable, portable and therefore palatable for those who want to be more comfortable with their smartphone in jeans. So here's OnePlus 8 beats 8 Pro in the "portability" issue.

MISCELLANEOUS (wireless charging - waterproof)

OnePlus 8 Pro has two features that are missing from version 8, namely the wireless charging 30w , IP68 certification. So, remembering that the damage caused by water infiltration, are not covered by any brand even on IPx certified phones, here it becomes a truly personal matter. In my case, whether there are these 2 characteristics or not, nothing changes at all. I use Wireless charging very little and I have never taken a bath with a 1000 € smartphone. For some, wireless charging could be important, but given the not exaggerated diffusion of this technology (for the first time on a OnePlus) I do not consider it , together with the IP68 certification, a fundamental discriminant for choosing a phone. Of course, if it is for you, you will have no choice .. but in my personal ranking I cannot consider the Pro more attractive for this difference. Of course, better to have them than not to have them ..

CAMERA

Here, finally we find something where the Pro beats the younger brother. The camera departments are decidedly different: in OnePlus 8 we find a triple module from 48Mpx (main sensor Sony imx 586) + 16Mpx (wide angle) + 2Mpx (Macro). On the Pro a quad room 48Mpx (main sensor Sony imx 689) + 48Mpx (wide angle) + 8Mpx (3x telephoto) + 5Mpx (photochromic sensor). But how do they behave on the pitch? In daytime shots, with lots of light, they will be poco appreciable the differences between the 2 main and wide-angle sensors, but when the light starts to decrease then the quality of the Sony imx 689 will come out great. Even with the night mode there will be many differences in favor of the 8 Pro. In addition on the Pro we will have the 3x zoom cam which obviously will be far better than a zoom performed with the 8, which will perform a purely digital enlargement. In my opinion, the macro sensors on one side and photochromic sensors on the other are negligible (this could make sense when the infrared shutter function was enabled to see through light plastic and even clothes :))

Identical the selfie cam from 16Mpx (Sony IMX471 sensor)

COLOR

I also want to talk about the colors available this year, leaving out the classic black that I think has now run its course .. green or blue? Both beautiful, but if the blue follows the color of the old 7 pro and 7T pro, the green is really gorgeous! So this new Glacial Green coloring is absolutely recommended.

PROJECTED IMPACT

I just wanted to talk to you about the differences between these 2 fantastic smartphones because from a functional point of view they are simply perfect. No lag, hyper speed in any operation you do (social, download, app installation, browsing, etc.), perfect multi tasking, excellent autonomy, very good photos, excellent display, high-level stereo sound, in short, real top-of-the-range.

The only drawback, which will probably be eliminated shortly, is the absence of the ever on display. For several months now there has been rumors about the imminent arrival of this FUNDAMENTAL feature for Amoled phones without notification LEDs. Hopefully it's the right time and Pete Lau's tweet bodes well.

The thorny issue is that of price. Moreover, it was known that the first generation of 5G phones would cost dearly and in fact in this first part of 2020 all prices had a significant increase. on the official website we start from about € 700 for OnePlus 8 version 8 / 128Gb and € 900 for the Pro in the same memory cut. 12 / 256Gb cuts are also available, which naturally increase by around € 100. But don't worry because through our coupons and GOOD BANG that we thank for sending the samples, you can buy them at much more affordable prices, with discounts that exceed 30% on the list price. Excellent news also for the guarantee that will be the official OnePlus guarantee, which can therefore also be managed by the Italian call center, valid for one year.

Basically I can assure you that if you choose one or the other model it won't make a big difference! My personal final tip is the following: do you want a “truly portable” smartphone? then go to OnePlus 8. Is your focus photography? is wireless charging essential? then to force on OnePlus 8 Pro.
